Shut Down Warwick Saleyards

Warwick Saleyards operate two livestock auctions every week for both cattle and sheep. The facilities are completely inadequate in terms of animal welfare. There is very little shade and animals are often left for hours in the hot sun, in crowded pens without access to water.

The Southern Downs Regional Council is currently looking at alternatives, acknowledging that the facilities are nearing the end of their operational life. It is unacceptable that they continue to operate these saleyards until they can meet basic animal welfare standards. Please email the CEO and voice your concerns.

Dear David,

The Southern Downs Regional Council’s sale yards are, by the Council’s own admission, inadequate, and pose serious threats to animal welfare. There is very little shade available, and even when temperatures exceeded 40 degrees on the 2nd December 2020, no water was given to the sheep and lambs who were showing very clear signs of heat stress.

Signs that may be seen in sheep as they are progressively exposed to heat conditions include:
- shade seeking;
- increased standing;
- bunching to seek shade from other sheep;
- changes to, or increased, respiratory rate; and
- immobility or staggering.

All of the above can be seen in video footage taken at the Saleyards on December 2nd, 2020. It is highly concerning that staff at the sale yards were more concerned about people taking photos than of the obvious heat stress, with the sheep heavily panting and bunching up to try and reach the tiny amount of shade.

I understand that the Council is looking at alternatives to the McEvoy sale yards. I am calling on you, as the CEO, to immediately close the existing site. It is unacceptable that thousands of sheep and cattle continue to be exposed to these deficient conditions, especially through the hot Queensland summer.
